About

The history of The Langham is steeped in elegant Edwardian Eastbourne.

Established in 1913, the hotel came of age in a golden era for English seaside towns, particularly Eastbourne, a magnet for wealthy Londoners, artists and society figures seeking the therapeutic sea air and calm bathing waters.

Situated on the Royal Parade, Eastbourne’s famous seafront promenade, we’ve been welcoming guests for over a century with the same excellent attentive service that has always been our hallmark.

Ever faithful to our independent spirit, guests love The Langham for its stunning sea views, award-winning AA Rosette restaurant - serving a modern British brasserie menu for lunch and dinner, traditional afternoon teas by the sea, our famed Sunday lunch service and of course, the best breakfast you’ll get in Eastbourne.

Book your stay by the sea now and see why our guests return to us year after year.

A potted history of The Langham

It was the Victorians who really put Eastbourne on the map, transforming it from a small fishing and farming community to a glitzy seaside resort; the town’s seafront promenades, famous pier and domed pavilion and exquisitely manicured gardens a direct legacy of the late nineteenth century.

By the time The Langham Eastbourne opened its doors on the Royal Parade in 1913, Eastbourne was in full swing. Contrasted to the bustle of neighbouring Brighton, Eastbourne was favoured for its exclusivity, quiet charm and architectural appeal.

In 2005, The Langham was bought by the Kirby family who, incredibly, became only the second owners of the hotel in its lifetime. Neil Kirby, a former General Manager of the exclusive Grosvenor Hotel in London, alongside his wife Wendy, transformed The Langham, achieving four-star status and an AA Rosette Award for The Langham Restaurant & Conservatory.

Successfully recreating Eastbourne’s heyday, The Langham became one of Eastbourne’s best loved hotels to stay and dine.   In 2026, The Langham entered its next chapter, bought by Nova, The Super Hotel Group, intent on retaining its fiercely independent charm and all that guests have come to love The Langha

The Royal Parade Beach

Eastbourne is famously known as the sunniest spot in Britain, receiving 500 more hours sun annually than the UK average.

And nowhere is it easier to get your face in the sun than our home, Eastbourne’s Royal Parade beach, part of the town’s three-mile seafront promenade where you can step from the hotel lobby into direct sunlight all year round.

Built in the early 1880s, the Royal Parade was designed to stop the sea encroaching upon the town. Little over ten years later it had become a striking sea-side promenade thronged with people ‘taking’ the sea air, many in their Sunday best, the ultimate in peacocking.

Today, quieter than Eastbourne’s main beach, the Royal Parade beach is where the locals go, a sand and shingle beach where you can escape the main crowds and enjoy a relaxing day sunbathing and swimming – accessible directly outside of the hotel.
